Jan. 23, 2009 (China Knowledge) – Intel Corp (INTC), the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, plans to close a total of four facilities in the Philippines and Malaysia, shifting some assembly and testing to a plant in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, sources reported.

Intel’s decision to move some of its Asian assembly and testing into its newest facilities in Chengdu is in response to rising labor costs and lower demand in the local markets.

The Chengdu plant will expand according to the original schedule, said a representative of Intel last Thursday. The new investment in the plant and the expansion in productivity will draw upstream and downstream enterprises to the city and will also relieve local unemployment pressure.
