Nov. 14, 2008 (China Knowledge) – China’s electricity output went down 4% year on year to 264.5 billion kWh in October, mainly dragged down by the decreased coal fuelled electricity generation, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.

During the month, output of coal fuelled electricity, which accounts for around 80% of the total electricity output, slid 5.2% over a year ago, while electricity generated from nuclear power plants surged 11.2% year on year. Output of those hydropower stations edged down slightly by 1.4% compared with the same period last year.

The decrease in electricity output is mainly attributed to the declining demand from China’s secondary industry, which takes up 76% in the total electricity consumption, according to analysts.

However, they remain optimistic in China’s power demand because of the RMB 4 trillion stimulus package by the Chinese government to boost domestic demand.
